In next project in 3D objects, we are moving on to papercraft. Papercraft is an art form that uses the medium of paper or card and turning it into 2D or 3D forms.

Out of all the articles on the different types of paper art, the illuminated cut paper light boxes caught my attention the most. Before this, I was interested on making paper art myself, and while browsing the internet for inspiration, I came across Hari & Deepti's pieces prior to this project. I was drawn to their work because of how beautiful and simple they were. Also just looking at those light boxes bring me some kind of peace; like that feeling when you're out stargazing. So when I saw they were included in the list, I knew I had to write about them.

Hari & Deepti believe that “Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium. It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it in to something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.”

With the use of simply card stock, light and drawing/cutting tools, Hari and Deepti draw and cut out shapes from paper and individually piece them together in a box. They start off drawing out the individual shapes on the card stock and then carefully cutting them out. From there, they start layering the pieces to form the shape; they do it by cutting out long thin strands of foam cores to space out each layer. When everything is pieced together, they lastly add the back light and box frame, TADAH the art piece is complete!

They both successfully showed how paper can really be limitless when you just put your imagination to it. They believed that you can create the most intricate pieces of art just by simply and carefully cutting out shapes and putting them together in a way that brings a whole other life to it.
Both used the simple trick of the light to really bring out the pieces. It's truly amazing how different the art can look when the light is turned on. They really bring you into another world of fantasy.
