Mixtape

Image
For this project, we had to create a 3D paper cut of something significant to our lives. I wanted to go a little more retro and chose on creating a cassette tape since music is a big part of my life; singing, playing instruments, making music are something important to me. For my prototype, I just went with a simple rectangle outline and cut out the smaller rectangle and circles where the tape would be seen in. The hardest part of the prototype was the circles. cutting them out was painful. During the critiques, it was mentioned how I should add more little details and make it more look like a cassette. Instead of simple circles, I should get thin strips of paper and roll them up to make the tape. For the circular area that hold up the tape, I could roll up thicker pieces of paper so it goes through the tape instead.

In next project in 3D objects, we are moving on to papercraft. Papercraft is an art form that uses the medium of paper or card and turning it into 2D or 3D forms. Out of all the articles on the different types of paper art, the illuminated cut paper light boxes caught my attention the most. Before this, I was interested on making paper art myself, and while browsing the internet for inspiration, I came across Hari & Deepti's pieces prior to this project. I was drawn to their work because of how beautiful and simple they were. Also just looking at those light boxes bring me some kind of peace; like that feeling when you're out stargazing. So when I saw they were included in the list, I knew I had to write about them. Hari & Deepti  believe that “Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium. It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it in to something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal

Scanning

Image
This is a 3D scan of a lotion bottle that I have that is shaped like a cute little house. I didn't have a lot of things I could think of that can fit the scanner, but luckily I found this lotion container last minute, it was small enough and actually had some shape and texture to it.

During the critique, most agreed to work on this piece. The feedback I got on it was how I should add more to it and making it detailed. For instance, Amanda had suggested several details to add in, like coloring in the flowers and the keys of the piano, putting grass as the base the flowers to sit on, and adding music sheets to make it seem like a song is going to be played on it. The few more details I added on were the vines to make it seem like the garden was growing. For the color of the piano I wanted to keep it white to emphasis the garden to show how when making music, ideas (represented by the flowers), start blooming and soon making it into a garden. There were several times I got frustrated because the program wasn't working the way I wanted it to, but at the same time it was fun playing around with it. This piece was comparing how making music and tending to a garden are almost alike. One man made, the other is the work of mother nature, but if you have to p
